HP ‎Omen Keyboard 1100 Overview

When you think of makers of gaming keyboards such as HP Omen Gaming Keyboard, HP probably isn’t the first that comes to mind. Its Omen-branded keyboards and mice are made to sync up with its Omen family of gaming laptops and desktops, but they are overshadowed in the wider market by the likes of Corsair, Logitech, Razer, and SteelSeries. The company hopes to boost its reputation with gamers and typists, a glowing-red mechanical-switch model with its own spin on clicks keys. But considering these aren’t genuine Cherry MX switches, and the feature set is thin, you could do a lot better for the bucks, unless you find it at a big discount.

Blue Is the Loudest Color

The HP Omen Gaming Keyboard 1100’s key switches sound a lot like Cherry MX Blues as you type, but they’re imitations. The classic Cherry MX Blue switch, praised by gamers and typists alike, is known for its audible click, tactile bump, and 50 centinewton actuation force. Once we got our fingers on these, though, we noticed the difference between Cherry MX Blue and these generic “Blue-style” switches. These keys have a spongy resistance that some players will prefer; others, especially those used to the real deal, not so much. Also, at least according to my fingers, HP has increased the key-press actuation force required versus a true Cherry MX Blue. The keys feel “heavier,” as a result.
