Design
On the outside, The changes of the ThinkPad E15 compared with the E590 mirror the changes to the ThinkPad E14: The chassis of the ThinkPad E15 is thinner (1 mm) and lighter (roughly 200 g) than the preceding model. The keyboard design has been changed as on the smaller E14, which means that the keyboard (which has a numpad on the 15.6-inch model) is not easily repairable anymore. Different from the E14, the bottom of the ThinkPad E15 is still made out of plastic. Aluminum is only used for the display lid.
Processor
The Lenovo Thinkpad E15 is equipped with the the Intel Core i7-1165G7 is a higher-end, quad-core SoC designed to be used in ultra-thin laptops. The Tiger Lake-UP3 processor was unveiled in September 2020. It has four Hyper-Threading-enabled Willow Cove cores at its disposal running at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) Boosting up to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). The all-core Boost frequency is 4.1 GHz. This i7 was the second-fastest CPU of the TGL-UP3 lineup when Intel initially launched the series in 2020. Core i7-1165G7 is ever-so-slightly inferior to the Core i7-1185G7 in that the vPro support is nowhere to be found, the clock speeds are lower, and the iGPU’s clock speed is a little lower as well.
Graphics
The Lenovo Thinkpad E15 is equipped with the Nvidia GeForce MX350 is a dedicated entry-level mobile graphics card for laptops. It was released in February 2020 and is based on the same GP107 Pascal chip with 640 shaders as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 for laptops. The memory bus is cut in half to 64 bit (GDDR5). First benchmarks, Nvidia states on the product page that the MX350 offers 2.5x of the performance of a Intel Iris Plus Graphics G7 in an i7-1065G7 (vs 2x for the MX330). Therefore, demanding games of 2019 like The Division 2, Metro Exodus or Rage 2 will only run in lowest detail settings acceptable. Less demanding games like Fifa 20 should run fine in high settings and even 1080p. However, this is always also depending on the used processor and main memory.
Display
Apart from the obligatory TN HD option (1366×768), which should be avoided by all means, there is only a single screen option: A matte FHD screen (1920×1080) that is based on IPS technology and does not offer touch support. According to Lenovo, the brightness of the screen should reach 250 cd/m², but we measure 293 cd/m². This might be an outlier for this specific unit, but at least in terms of brightness, the E ThinkPad does not disappoint this time.
